In ancient days, it was called Gulshanabad. The archaeological excavations reveal that the city was inhabited during the early Stone Age and the evidences were found in the riverbed at Gangavadi. Agastya the legendary sage is said to have lived in the banks of the River Godavari running through this region. Nashik served as the largest market place of the country in 150 B.C. It is believed that when Surpanaka, the sister of Raavan tried to seduce Ram, Ram cut off her nose or nashika at Panchavati which is within the limits of the city. The name Nashika later came to be called Nashik. From 1487 A.D., Mughals ruled this place. In the writings about the Mughal Emperor Akbar called Ein-e-Akbari, there is detailed information about Nashik. From 100 B.C. to 600 A.D., Bhikku Sangha was popular among the people and this could be understood by the Brahmi scripts that are found in the Pandavleni Caves. Gautamiputra Saatkarni of Saatkarni dynasty ruled this place and it was he who donated one of the caves. Padmaasana and Trikantak were the other names of this city. Hazrat Peer Sayed Sadiqu Shah Hussaini came here from Madina and he named it Gulchanabad meaning the city of rose. He spread Islam in this city. It was again named Nashik during the rule of the Peshwas. It came under the control of Peshwas in 1751. The Peshwa rulers Raghobadada and Anandibai lived here. It was a beautiful city surrounded by nine hills and the beauty of the city attracted the British. On 19th April 1818, it came under the control of the British East India Company. The first modern library of Bombay Presidency was established in Nashik in 1840. Other basic facilities such as the distillery, central jail and press were established in Nashik making it more important. There were some agitations here during the Great Revolt of 1857. An Anglo-vernacular school was started in 1861 and it was made a municipality in 1864. In the second half of 19th century, a saint called Dev Mamaledar also called Yeshvant Mahadev Bhosekar lived here. He helped the people generously and when he died in 1887, a small temple was built on his samadi and it is called Yeshvant Patangana. Nashik railway station was built in 1862 and the district of Nashik was formed in 1869. One of the revolutionist Anand Kanhere shot Mr. Jackson who was the then collector of Nashik on 21st December 1909. He died on the spot and this led to lots of turmoil. He and other conspirators were sentenced to death and they were hanged on 7th March 1910. Mass Satyagraha was organized in Nashik in 1932. After the independence of India, Nashik became a part of Bombay presidency and later a city of Maharashtra. Nashik was famous for its silver and gold ornaments and it became one of the important trade centers of these items. Nashik photos and Nashik videos will speak of its heritage.
