Udaipur's History Udaipur's history dates back to 1559 when it was founded by Maharana Udai Singh II as the capital of his erstwhile Mewar kingdom. In 1568, the Mughal emperor Akbar captured the fort of Chittor, and Udai Singh moved the capital to the site of his residence, which became the city of Udaipur. As the Mughal empire weakened, the Sisodia ranas, and later maharanas regained their independence and recaptured most of Mewar except for Chittor. The most glorious period in Udaipur's history came in the 15th and 16th centuries during the reigns of Rana Kumbha, Rana Sanga and Maharana Pratap. Mewar made great progress in the arts and culture, consolidated its military strength and faced squarely up to the might of the Mughals. Udaipur remained the capital of the state, which became a princely state of British India in 1818. The rajvansh of Udaipur was one of the oldest dynasties of the world. When India got independent in 1947, the Maharaja of Udaipur granted the place to the Government of India. At that time, Mewar was merged into the state of Rajasthan. The "Lake City", Udaipur has several popular tourist destinations in and around. It is known for its lakes, palaces, gardens and historical monuments. City Palace, Fateh Sagar Lake, Gulab Bagh and Maharana Pratap Memorial are some major Udaipur tourist attractions. City Palace is the largest of its kind in Rajasthan. It consists of a unique combination of terraces, courtyards and hanging gardens. Now it serves as a museum having a collection of art and culture related to the royal family of Udaipur. Lakes are also the famous Udaipur tourist attractions. Lake Pichola, having temples, havelies, gardens and palaces on its banks, is the main lake. Jag Mandir and Jag Niwas are two islands in this lake and can be visited as part of a boat ride across the lake. The two other lakes are Fateh Sagar and Udai Sagar.
